Introduction

Introduction

Founded in 1977, the Department of Computer Science, National Tsing Hua University, has committed to high quality research and education in computer science for more than 35 years. In 1990, the department started to offer the bachelor degree program, and since then has become one of the most popular choices to thousands of high school graduates in Taiwan. The beautiful Tsing Hua campus with hills and lakes provides an ideal environment for learning and teaching, and also steers innovation and excellence for advanced research.

Currently there are more than 40 full-time faculty members in our department, offering courses covering a variety of topics and state-of-the-art areas in computer science. The curriculum for the undergraduate program puts emphasis on providing both a solid foundation of computer science basics, and a flexible developing roadmap for meeting individual students’ needs and goals. We also motivate undergraduate students in practicum and research projects to cultivate their experience and skills necessary for problem solving and research and development. For students aiming at advanced study, our graduate program can also provide comprehensive support for guiding graduate students to perform advanced research or develop practical industrial applications.

The Department of Computer Science is recognized and accredited by the Institute of Engineering Education Taiwan (IEET) [1] starting 2013.

Highlights

Industrial relations

The faculty of the department puts emphasis both on theories and practice, and has established close partnerships with the industry. We have collaborated with numerous research labs and companies including Microsoft, Google, Intel, Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI), Institute for Information Industry (III), Accton, Faraday, ZyXEL etc. A number of faculty members have been involved in the creation of spin-off companies to turn our research outcomes to products in areas of IC design and Internet multimedia.

Internationalization

We also strive to internationalize our courses and programs, and to offer high quality education to international students. Our current foci and achievements summarized as follows:

1.    In terms of teaching, several courses have been offered in English.

2.  Since 2005, we have started to offer the International Master Program in Information Systems and Applications (IMPISA) for international students to apply. The master program receives support from the International Cooperation and Development Fund (ICDF) [2] . IMPISA was ranked as the best graduate program among other programs funded and supported by ICDF in 2013 [3] . For more information of IMPISA, refer to the following websites.

3.  Since 2014, we have collaborated with Academia Sinica to jointly offer the Taiwan International Graduate Program (TIGP) on Social Networks and Human-Centered Computing (SNHCC). TIGP-SNHCC aims to provide high quality Ph.D-level education and research training on the emerging interdisciplinary topics of social networks and human-centered computing. We welcome interested and qualified students to apply to this program. For more information, see the following websites.

Facilities

The department currently has sufficient space in two modern buildings. The newest building was constructed in 2011. It has a foremost lecture hall where hundreds of lectures, seminars and colloquiums can be held. We also provide reading rooms and study halls offering different informational magazines, periodicals, books and a comfortable environment for students to study. In addition, the humane open space of department provides the students a place to rest and chat after class.

Two high-performance and high-availability cloud servers are installed to provide various Internet services to the faculty, students, and staff in our department. Three computer rooms containing more than 150 personal computers enable computerized teaching and learning. The computer rooms are open 24-7 providing convenient access to computing and Internet services to the faculty, students, and staff.

Servers and computers are connected to the Internet through high-availability gigabit Ethernet. All floors are covered by Wi-Fi to provide easy Internet access for mobile devices.

Activities

In an atmosphere focusing on the development of individuality and excellence, not only do the students have outstanding performance in academics, but also are awarded in many tough external contests, in both academics and sports.

Just to name a few awards, in 2013, our students won the championship for the Taiwan Student Cluster Competition (TSCC), the second place for the TAU Variation Aware Timing Analysis Contest, and the first place for the first Asia Student Supercomputer Challenge (ASC). In 2011, we also won the championship for Supercomputing 2011 (SC’11) Student Cluster Competition. For more information of our performance in student competitions, see Student Honors.
